Additional information

This paper presents an important experimental investigation into the behaviour of concrete filled, thin steel, tubular box columns with tab shear connectors. These column types are used in structures prone to earthquakes because they generally exhibit both high strength and ductility. These particular composite columns exhibit a good load-displacement response because the perimeter steel provides encasement to the interior concrete, considerably enhancing the overall strength and cyclic ductility of the element. Much additional work has followed on from this approach adopting a modified technique to upgrade existing structures prone to earthquake damage.
