Early trench tactics in the French army: the second Battle of Artois, May-June 1915
This research monograph of c.85,000 words utilises French-language material that is only available in French libraries and archives. The organization of the French archives used in the preparation of this monograph is such that the sources consulted were co-mingled in large boxes (cartons) with very little indication beforehand of what each carton might contain. The stringent and ever-changing French archival practices, which sharply limited the number of cartons that could be ordered each day, and the poor cataloguing and indexing meant that many separate trips to the archives in France were required. These systemic limitations greatly slowed and complicated the research process.
