Double-weighted statement

This is an extensive study of the emergence of psychoanalysis as a theoretical field from late C19 neurology and its development through a conflict of opposing conceptual models internal to the field. It provides detailed analysis of the various models of trauma and its only apparent abandonment for a developmentalist model of sexuality and psychic structure in 1897. It traces the return in different conceptual forms of the legacy of trauma theory in Freud’s metapsychology, and demonstrates the key role of Freud’s analyses of literature and art in the moments of theoretical crisis and reconstruction.
