Cerebral water transport using multiple-network poroelastic theory: Application to normal pressure hydrocephalus
This paper introduces a “first principles” explanation for a paradoxical disease – Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). The aetiology of NPH as a disease has been the subject of clinical speculation, but the physiological changes that can lead to the condition have not been identified. The paper introduces a four-compartment, multiscale brain model that guides clinical diagnosis of NPH and specifies the level of imaging resolution necessary to identify relevant biomarkers. A follow-up major grant (EU IP, VPH-DARE@IT, 14M Euro) with Prof Ventikos as scientific co-coordinator has forged strong international clinical collaboration links (hilkka.soininen@uef.fi; daniel.rufenacht@hirslanden.ch).
