Estimation of harpsichord inharmonicity and temperament from musical recordings.
The first paper to perform automatic estimation of harpsichord temperament (tuning style) and string inharmonicity from standard musical recordings, a task requiring a much higher frequency resolution (hundredths of a semitone) than provided by standard signal analysis algorithms. This has several applications, including: advanced music education (aural training) and giving feedback to performers, instrument builders and tuners on tuning accuracy and stability, particularly aiding non-expert tuners. It also facilitates musicologists asking new types of research questions about historical performance practice. The work led to an Institute of Musical Research (University of London) workshop on temperament (17 October 2011, c.50 attendees).
