Additional information

Mobile device protection is frequently undermined by awkward security measures. We present new empirical research in the area of user authentication, based on field trial experimentation. Focusing on interactions between devices, and detection of other devices, we collected a dataset of 1.23 million observations from 20 subjects performing authentic daily activities. Using our novel authentication aura approach (Hocking et al. 2011), we obtained results that demonstrate a 75% reduction in the explicit requests needed to authenticate each user, confirming the significant contribution of the authentication aura approach to delivering usable security.
