Extraordinary beliefs: a historical approach to a psychological problem (CUP) provides a detailed and novel argument about the form and function of beliefs in extraordinary phenomena since the early nineteenth century. It is based upon the collection and analysis of hundreds of primary sources. Because of the esoteric subject matter – magic, psychic and paranormal phenomena - many of these sources were difficult to access. Because of the nature of the argument, some were subjected to detailed discourse analysis. This lengthy process was essential to the original argument made in the book, which challenges the dominant view within psychology.
