Additional information

This paper proposes a new method for multiview depth map compression for 3D video applications. Using the proposed method, certain viewpoint depth maps are replaced with predicted depth maps at lower bit rates. This saves on bit rate for transmission as well as maintaining the perceived quality of the reconstructed stereoscopic videos. This method has been proven through subjective testing to maintain perceived quality and enables 3D video coding with much improved efficiency. The resultant technique has been submitted to MPEG for standardisation and has also been adopted by two EC FP7 projects DIOMEDES and ROMEO.
