Additional information

The novel approach outlined in a previous output characterised the fatigue loading profile using the maximum fatigue load. This is fine for constant amplitude fatigue loading but under more generalised loading (variable amplitude) it is necessary to accommodate the changing load profile. This is done in this paper by implementing a Goodman type adaptation that had been shown in a highly cited earlier publication to be applicable to adhesively bonded joints. This is the first time such an approach has been used. Excellent correlation between predicted and experimental data was found and the approach is being assessed by Airbus.
