This is the first paper to report on a reference electrode concept for use specifically in anion-exchange membrane-containing fuel cells (known as alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells). The concept using a Pd-coated Pt wire reference electrode for evaluation of both the anode and cathode is also novel and may well have application in more traditional proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
