This book studies Latin poetry across a span of around four hundred years, and within that span discusses numerous different poets and engages in close analysis of a very large number of individual poems and poetic passages. It is essentially a collection of such close readings, and thus equivalent to a significant number of articles. It is 150,000 words in length. It was mainly written during two years' leave from teaching made possible by a Leverhulme award, but is the fruit of, in total, research extending over most of a decade.
