Additional information

This article addressed solid hexahedral finite element meshes required for modelling composite components with complex geometric shapes. A new purpose written pre-processor was developed, which extrudes solid elements with element orientations that accurately match the complex doubly curved geometries. This new modelling technique has been used by Rolls-Royce as a part of their structural design tools (Mr E Ravey, Composite Specialist, Fans Global Engineering, eric.ravey@rolls-royce.com).
