Additional information

This paper considers blood flow at the bifurcation of 3D carotid artery model using the lattice Boltzmann method, representing the first application of this technique to a realistic 3D model of the carotid artery. A detailed representation of the flow field at the bifurcation was presented and a variation in the position of the maximum velocity was identified over a cardiac cycle. Understanding of flow in this artery is of vital importance in understanding and modelling the progression of atherosclerosis, which is one of the principle causes of mortality in the western world.
