Additional information

Use of a photonic crystal optical fibre to construct a recess tip electrochemical sensor is a departure in sensor design, and offers sufficient mechanical strength for transcutaneous use, whilst reducing surface biofouling at the recess. Through continued work with the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (Erlangen) a joint patent application (EPO 10014711.5 -2204) was submitted. The fibre was later modified with enzymes for metabolites to enable in vivo biochemical monitoring in experimental animals as part of an EPSRC Programme Grant on athlete monitoring; the end user partner was UK Sport.
