Simple matching vs linear assignment in scheduling models with positional effects: A critical review
This paper is published as a survey invited by the journal’s editor Professor R. Slowinski. The review part critically evaluates the achievements of earlier research in the area of scheduling with positionally dependent processing times with and without machine maintenance, and indicates major drawbacks. A larger part of the paper contains the original results obtained by the authors that show how more general models can be handled more efficiently and by a unified approach. The results in this paper have been further extended to even more general models that combine positional and time dependent effects as well as arbitrary machine maintenance (Omega, 2014, 42, 166-178).
