A Study of the Velocity Field during Evaporation of Sessile Water and Water/Ethanol Drops
This is the first full flow-field measurement of velocities induced during evaporation of a sessile droplet of volatile liquid, using equipment bought under grant EP/C541820/1. It revealed significant differences in the induced flows within pure water and aqueous mixtures not hitherto reported, overcoming difficulties of time- and length-scales inherent in the transient nature of such flows. Follow-on work is reported in DoI:10.1103/PhysRevE.83.051602 and in DoI:10.1103/PhysRevLett.106.205701. The paper contributed to the award of a collaborative grant on evaporative cooling, involving collaboration with Brunel and 4 industrial partners (including Selex-ES, Thermacore Europe, EP/K00963X/1).
