Additional information
This paper is based on work performed on a commercial near beta-titanium alloy recently developed by Timet to understand the decomposition of the beta phase during heat treatment. Combining transmission electron microscopy with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction provided evidence for a decomposition mechanism that can be used to engineer the microstructure and hence control mechanical properties. The paper also provides insight into the important role of the constituent elements an important feature of a successful appeal to the European Patent Court where Dashwood was an expert witness for Timet (Stephen.Fox@timet.com).
