A method of fundamental solutions for transient heat conduction
The method of fundamental solutions has mainly been applied to stationary (elliptic) equations. A generalization of the MFS to time-dependent problems (parabolic) is proved rigorously for the first time. This paper generated further research: applications to inverse Stefan problems (jointly with an EPSRC-funded PhD-student), estimating the growth of a wax layer when transporting heated oil (partially funded international collaboration with Prof. Schulkes, StatoilHydro:Norway) and led to new methods for heat source and cavity identification. Work was presented by invitation at the “Inverse Problems Modeling and Simulation 2012” international conference with follow up paper under review.
