Antibiotic mediated synthesis of gold nanoparticles with potent antimicrobial activity and their application in antimicrobial coatings
Novel use of gold in highly active antimicrobial material with increased stability. Extensive media coverage included on television (BBC regional news), radio (BBC radio 2), and online (American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, Microbes Today, Metro, Mail online). Led to direct development funding from the World Gold Council (£65,000). Further development also via competitive application for beamtime on ISIS (2012) and HRTEM time in KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany (5 days, FP7 QNano project, 2013). Materials currently being trialled in the development of antibacterial Slippery Liquid Infused Porous Surfaces at the Wyss Institute for biologically inspired engineering, Cambridge, USA (Aizenberg group).
