Building Performance Evaluation

The CIC-Start Online project aimed to embed sustainable building design and refurbishment into practice. The project assisted small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop and test innovations at the project partners’ institutions. It received feasibility funding from CICStart online LUPS/ERDF/2008/2/1/0237 (£959k) 2009 - 2012 (Sharpe was a co-director). This chapter discusses the performance of buildings and highlights CIC-Start projects undertaken by MEARU and collaborators. These include: 9-11 Gilmours close - comparing theoretical against actual performance; Hybrid Solar Thermal Mass System Development; Development of Post Occupancy Evaluation for evaluation of innovative low carbon social housing; Assessing the environment and energy impact of occupant behaviour; Tool to Calibrate Cost Effectiveness of Energy Efficiency; PassivTen: Refurbishment of tenement properties to Passivhaus standard; BIPV/T modular roof development for zero-energy prefabricated housing; Performance balanced MVHR system as an extractor of roof-integrated PV heated air; Embedding Post Occupancy Evaluation into Practice. An independent review estimated that SME's increased investment £23,261,212, improved 337 products, processes or services, and introduced 162 new ones due to the project. The project assisted 6 businesses, increasing sales by £8.14 million, and creating 189 jobs and safeguarding 828.5.
