This book presents the culmination of a five-year, £3m EPSRC funded research project that Cooper led as PI. Cooper not only led the whole project but also contributed two chapters and the integrating narrative. The whole project was one of the first multi-disciplinary projects funded under the EPSRC Sustainable Urban Environment programme. It brought together scientists, social scientists, architects and designers to work in an integrated way to consider the dynamics of designing sustainable cities.

This book presents the results of empirical research conducted with three local authorities and forty collaborating companies. Cooper’s work resulted in a new model of urban design decision-making, that has been taken forward through internships in two of the local authorities.

As such it developed new approaches to research practice across the disciplines as well as new insights into the topic. Indeed Cooper was invited to advise on EPSRC Strategic Advisory team for Environment and Infrastructure, and also asked to give a keynote address to the SUE academic community on how to lead such multi-disciplinary teams and deliver results in this field. She was funded by the EPSRC to bring together the whole SUE community, analyse the research funded by EPSRC and provide a blue print for future work, published as a report (http://suedialogues.wordpress.com/tag/sue-dialogues-workshop-report-epsrc/).
