Additional information

Tripping on stairs is a common factor in falls. The present study found that a visual illusion superimposed onto a block increased the perceived height of the block and consequently that when participants stepped on to the block foot clearance (and thus safety) was increased. We believe this application has functional value in making the most dangerous steps on stairs, the first and last ones that the elderly often trip on, appear taller to thus improve safety; and we are currently investigating the efficacy of such an application in elderly individuals (NIHR grant, Public Health Research Programme, 10/3009/06).
