English abstract

This article investigates the rapid spread of operatic performances beyond Europe during the first decades of the nineteenth century through a case study focused on the works of the most famous composer of the period, Gioachino Rossini. By tracing performances of Rossini’s operas during the 1820s and ’30s, first in Rio de Janeiro, home of the Portuguese court between 1808 and 1821, and then in the capitals of the newly independent republics of Argentina and Uruguay, I explore the local significance of these performances, along with their wider implications for the history of nineteenth-century opera.
