Additional information

This article was accompanied by a Commentary stating that "the overall attention to detail is impressive, and the methods and data are of the highest quality" and that this article "is a cogent reminder of the constant need to establish accuracy and reliability, even in one of the most basic techniques in the history of exercise physiology” (Gladden et al. MSSE 2012;44:288-9). Two subsequent Letters to the Editor also praised the methodological quality and the debate stimulated by this article (Shepard. MSSE 2012;44:1407 and Betts and Thompson. MSSE 2012;44:2040).
