This paper presents the first analytic expressions for the coupling between two off-axis, tilted coils, which allow robust prediction of the coupling in wireless power transfer applications. Previously it was necessary to resort to numerical methods. An invited workshop presentation followed at the IEEE IMS 2011 conference, Baltimore (www.ims2011.org/Technical_Program/Workshops/WFA.pdf ) and an invited “focused issue feature article” in IEEE Microwaves Magazine (DoI:10.1109/MMM.2012.2234634) and a book chapter (ISBN:978-8792329233). The work is being used: in Canada, DoI:10.1109/TBCAS.2011.2174794; and USA, DoI:10.1063/1.3626469. The results were critical to the award of a £4.3M EPSRC Programme Grant (EP/K034510, www.see.ed.ac.uk/~afm/IMPACT/information/flier1.pdf).
