Job Title:
Deputy Head of Department, Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics
Specific Research Responsibilities:
Leading research teams on solid-state laser engineering, particularly nonlinear frequency conversion and long wavelength semiconductor disk lasers, and industrial ultrashort pulse lasers.
Evidence of Research within Submitting Unit:
Dr Hopkins transferred from the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde to the Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP), first on secondment (01/08/12) and then as an employee (01/12/12). Prior to this he had PI status within the University from 2010. His current research is a continuation of that conducted while a University employee and he retains visiting researcher status. He co-supervises two University PhD students and his research remains intrinsically linked to that of his former University colleagues, illustrated by co-supervision of another PhD student to start in October 2013. The Director of CAP (Prof. Dawson) is seconded 50% from the University and is simultaneously Director of Research at the Institute of Photonics, illustrating CAP’s close links into the research of the partner University as per the established Fraunhofer model. Research represents the major portion of Dr Hopkins job description.
