Fast Isosurface Rendering on a GPU by Cell Rasterization
<25> This paper was another from Liu’s IIF, which performed a systemic investigation of GPU techniques in the context of volume visualisation. The novel approach to the rendering of isosurfaces within a volumetric grid described in the paper treated e ach volumetric cell as a single rendering primitive, substantially reducing the memory footprint required. A new sorting algorithm complemented the viewing structure and, unlike previous methods, this allowed the rendering of multiple transparent surfaces at virtually no cost. The improved speed made it feasible to employ better interpolation techniques thus also improving the quality of the resulting images.
