Additional information

In this collaborative research with the National Research Council Canada, an intense vortex shedding measured at Mach 0.6 is shown to enhance the base drag. In turbomachines, this contributes to passage loss, reduces the stage efficiency, and increases the engine operating costs. By selecting a different operating point, a turbine stage efficiency gain in the region of 2% is achievable. “A realisable 1% gain in cycle efficiency represents an annual reduction of 1.44MtCO2e from UK power stations and gas cost savings of £58.3M/year, based on the 2011 statistics from the Department of Energy and Climate Change” (Mark Willetts, mark.willetts@power.alstom.com).
