Additional information

A novel application of Monte Carlo methods to calculate the multipath spread statistics of HF signals from the output of standard international models is presented. Multipath spread is important since high values severely limit the performance of digitally modulated HF communication systems and the work shows significant deficiencies in the current methods used to derive the spread from the models. Preliminary discussions with the UK representative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) have suggested that the new technique may be included in future versions of the ITU-R standard models.
