A novel surface electrocardiogram-based marker of ventricular arrhythmia risk in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy.
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is responsible for >3 million deaths per year worldwide. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are of proven benefit in preventing SCD. Using the surface electrocardiogram, this paper presents the basis for the development of a new tool to assess ventricular arrhythmia (VA) risk and to test its utility in predicting risk of VA or death in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy who were candidates for ICD therapy. This tool is being implemented and tested at Glenfield Hospital aiming to reduce false-positives and false-negatives in the decision to implant ICD. A grant with 2 post-docs is under way.
