The role of large scale storage in a GB low carbon energy future: Issues and policy challenges
Demonstrates that high temporal resolution models are necessary to understand the role of electricity storage in future energy systems with large renewables penetrations. In consequence, most current studies underestimate the value of storage in future networks. Presents a new high level systems approach to quantifying the commercial viability of storage, drawing on high time resolution resource data. Findings justified further UKERC support in 2011 for a workshop to refine the ideas developed (see http://www.ukerc.ac.uk/support/tiki-index.php?page_ref_id=2889). As a result Gruenewald joined the advisory board for an influential Carbon Trust study (see http://www.carbontrust.com/media/129310/energy-storage-systems-role-value-strategic-assessment.pdf). Gruenewald was supported by UKERC (http://www.ukerc.ac.uk/support/0907Studentships) with Cockerill as supervisor.
