Additional information
Improved on our previous work on Sustainable Drainage System design by incorporating pollutant retention in a model that predicts the fate of heavy metals, applied to a rain garden system for a roundabout in Kent. Results show that levels of lead can build up in the upper layers of the system, but only constitute a health hazard after 10 years, while copper was successfully retained. Given concerns of preferential flow bypassing bioretention facilities, macropore flow was examined; results indicated it was not a threat to groundwater. The model is deemed useful for design including the use of climate change scenarios.
