Additional information

This study employed high level in-situ spectroscopic techniques to unravel a key problem in the synthetic community relating to the nature of the active catalytic species in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, used extensively in pharmaceutical and speciality chemical manufacture. Operando X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy reveals the reactivity of Pd nanoparticles is indeed heterogeneous in origin, and associated with the presence of stable surface defect atoms. In time, this discovery may pave the way for the design of shape-selected and alloy nanoparticles with enhanced activity and durability for Suzuki, and possibly other palladium-mediated, cross-coupling reactions.
