Living Streets Wohnwege

‘Living Streets‘ is a book that conducts research on access galleries in residential buildings. Over the last few years the concept of ‘laubengang’ or access gallery has been rediscovered as an open community area in multi-story housing that develops its unique quality as an inhabited space. In various ways the access gallery serves as a threshold between private and public. The book ‘living streets’ analyses and documents recent international examples. The book opens the discussion on the popularity and advantages as well as disadvantages of access galleries. The research reflects the situation in the Netherlands and in Austria and demonstrates how access galleries have been built in historic and contemporary buildings. The documentation encourages architects and planners to innovative residential design by rethinking access galleries in the means of economics and social aspects such as communication spaces. The publication is based on a study commissioned by the Wiener Wohnugnsbauforschung (2005). The study focused on 6 Viennese projects with access galleries. My research incorporated views expressed by residents on the use and practicalities of access galleries. A further study ‘Living Streets – Ayern’ was commissioned by the Supreme Building Authority, Bavariona State Ministry of the Interior. The book was funded and supported by the Bayrische Landesbank, Schoerghuber Unternehmensgruppe and the Leonhard-Lorenz-Foundation.
