Platform for Techno-economic Analysis of Fouling Mitigation Options in Refinery Preheat Trains
Preheat train fouling is the major source of energy inefficiency in oil refining. This paper demonstrates how cleaning schedules can be optimised for the large and complex networks of heat exchangers on oil refineries, in real time, using fouling models derived from the plant’s own data. Author Wilson delivered a Distinguished Speaker Series lecture at UBC, Vancouver, on this work in September 2009. The IPR generated in this project has been commercialised in the IHS-ESDU software tool SmartPM [contact Simon Pugh, email available on request] which has been purchased by Phillips66 and is being trialled by other oil majors.
