High peak-power picosecond pulse generation at 1.26 μm using a quantum-dot-based externalcavity mode-locked laser and tapered optical amplifier
This paper reports the development of a semiconductor 1.26μm ultrafast laser and its demonstration in multiphoton imaging. This spectral region enables bio-imaging at deeper penetration depths than what is typically achieved. The small footprint and low cost of this system is promising for widespread use in bio-imaging and other applications (paper was selected for the Virtual J. Biomedical Optics). This was the culmination of a major international collaboration (“FAST-DOT”, FP7), involving three other universities and two companies (all overseas). As a Work-Package Leader, Cataluna led this research line, coordinated the partners’ scientific activities and co-supervised the first and fourth authors.
