The new metamaterial design allows development of ultrathin (sub-millimetre) resonators in the microwave frequency region with a thickness reduction by a factor of over 100 as compared with the conventional designs and has potential applications as new microwave filters and sensors. The resultant devices are less sensitive to polarisation making them easy to use.
