Increasing power recovery and organic removal efficiency using extended longitudinal tubular microbial fuel cell (MFC) reactors
Scale-up without power loss is a critical hurdle and a significant challenge in the field of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) including microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The work in this paper presents a BES system that for the first time shows a near proportional relationship between increased volume and power production. Therefore this design can deliver a useable industrial MFC prototype for wastewater treatment. The work has already influenced leading international groups in the field to carry out similar experiments and repeat the findings. The work builds upon the patent Biological fuel cell: (US2010203361-(A1)) and has led to further EPSRC funded research.
