Hydrogen production from sewage sludge using mixed microflora inoculum: Effect of pH and enzymatic pretreatment
This paper demonstrated continuous hydrogen production from sewage in a continuously fed reactor for the first time. Sewage biosolids is a ubiquitous source of biomass for energy production but prior to this paper little research on hydrogen production using sewage sludge had been carried. The work involved collaboration with Biocatalysts Ltd., in developing a novel enzymatic pre-treatment of sewage biosolids increasing hydrogen production. The work was funded by Thames Water, the EPSRC and a European FP6 project involving 22 partners developing the optimum method to convert sewage sludge to energy and has influenced the research of 25 further international investigations.
