Double-weighted statement

This book is based on Leng’s doctoral thesis, and as such represents three years of research and several further years of rewriting. It is the first full biography of an important individual, based on full analysis of his published and unpublished writings, including several previously unidentified items. The eight chapters combine thematic and chronological analysis; none have been published in other formats. The work situates him within the intellectual, political, economic and religious cultures of his age, revealing the connections between areas usually treated separately. It offers a major reassessment of the intellectual community known as the Hartlib Circle.
