Additional information

Through her research into the communication of complex science through art and design to broader audiences, Wheeler was invited as artist/ designer in residence to the The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland in May 2012. PSI is one the largest research centres for natural and engineering sciences in Europe. The institute houses some of the largest science facilities available and hosts 2000 scientists per annum. The synchrotron light source and the developing Swiss Fell XRAY laser technology play cutting edge roles in understanding biological and materials science problems. As artist in residence, Wheeler explored not only the physical but cultural space of PSI and the way such a large scientific endeavour operates. The outcome of this residency is brought together in the book ‘Laser, Light and Life’. Through sketches, watercolours, photographs and new explorations using laser technology - reflecting in miniature the technology used by some PSI scientists, this work draws attention to the humanity essential to the success of big science. Through focusing on these human and environmental interactions, the work aims to develop alternative accessible routes to science which often otherwise appear distant and inaccessible.
