Dichter und Drogen: solo exhibition accompanied by catalogue

This solo exhibition was the first significant show of Dalwood’s work in Germany. The ten new paintings in this show employ printing techniques, a notable technical development in the work, in addition to the earlier processes, where a small collage constructed from sections of reproductions in magazines and art books was used as a ‘maquette’ for a large scale oil painting. A 40-page catalogue accompanied the exhibition, with an essay ‘Unspoken Images – Dexter Dalwood’s Search for the Essence of Poetry’ by Dr.Anette Hüsch (Director of the Kunsthalle in Kiel) published in German and English.

These new techniques were expanded in ‘Orientalism’ (2012), a solo exhibition of 7 paintings at David Risley Gallery, Copenhagen (12 May – 23 June 2012). This exhibition was reviewed in Frieze Magazine (Christine Antaya, Issue 149, September 2012). Works from these two exhibitions were subsequently included in The Space Between (2012) at Karsten Schubert in London; and Disaster / The End of Days (2013) at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris, co-curated by the art historian Michael Bracewell, author of the catalogue text for the gallery publication Disaster/End of Days.

Other recent group exhibitions which have included works because of Dalwood’s distinctive on-going dialogue with history painting and its relationship to contemporary practice included ‘Struggle(s)’ (2012) at Maison Particulière Art Center in Brussels; ‘Setting the Scene’ (2012) at Tate Modern in London; ‘Dublin Contemporary 2011’ in Dublin, Ireland (2011); ‘Nothing in the World But Youth’, at Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent (2011); ‘Germany is Your America’ at Broadway 1602 in New York (2011); ‘Backstage Riders’ at House E in Berlin (2011); and the ‘Art Foundation Mallorca Collection 2010’; and CCA Andratx in Andratx (2010).
