China's political economy in modern times: changes and economic consequences, 1800-2000
China’s Political Economy in Modern Times by Kent Deng unveils the key mechanisms underlying the major socio-economic changes that took place in China over the past two centuries. The argument here is that China’s cycle of prosperity-poverty-prosperity was, in the main, an outcome of state-building action from above rather than rebellion, class struggle or revolution from below. This is a novel perspective on Chinese economic history that challenges established views in the literature. This study builds substantially on the exploration of an unusually rich set of extensive primary sources, reflecting more than five years of collection and analysis of historical documents.
