It has long been unclear why common lock nuts become detached during vibration induced loosening, when Standards such as DIN tests suggest that this will not occur. This paper explains for the first time when and why nut and bolt separation will occur. Through Bolt Science, the results in this paper have informed new practice by Network Rail who have adopted other types of locking devices to prevent nut detachment instead of relying on prevailing torque alone.
