Frictional changes during repeated tightening of zinc plated threaded fasteners
Re-tightening of nuts and bolts is routine maintenance practice. Re-use of fasteners with certain finishes causes an increase in friction which may reduce pre-tension, resulting in serious failures and accidents. The results in this paper have informed evidence given at the Greyrigg Rail Accident Enquiry and successful solutions for problems raised by the Electricity Board for Ireland and the National Caravan Council. They are also incorporated in training courses aimed at reducing the risks associated with threaded fastener re-use, delivered worldwide to companies such as: Jaguar Land Rover, Honda and Caterpillar, by Bolt Science.
