This work concerns the development of next-generation aero-engines, and was supported by Rolls-Royce through the University Technology Centre in Southampton. This was a speculative study to investigate alternative possibilities to replace high bypass aero engines and work based on the ideas outlined in this paper remains on-going under new funding at the University of Southampton.
