Additional information

This paper proposed an entirely new approach to the synthesis of the control structure and algorithms for optimising control of integrated wastewater treatment plants under a full range of disturbance inputs. This hierarchical, multilayer control structure with robustly feasible, softly switched model predictive control algorithms, operating at different time scales to solve this complex problem, was derived from work within FP5 EU project SMAC. The control system prototype was validated at a plant in Kartuzy, Poland achieving significant cost savings, fulfilling the effluent discharge limits over long periods and maintaining the system in sustainable operation.
