English abstract

This article offers the first full-scale investigation of animal sacrifice in ancient Greek magic. Starting from the ancient (and modern) notion that animal sacrifice is central to Greek religious practice, it gathers all extant evidence pertaining to animal killing in the Greek magical papyri, defines what is meant by ‘sacrifice’ in the context of magic, creates a typology of the kill according to ritual context, and compares some salient features of animal sacrifice in Greek magic (including types and performative contexts of the kill) with those of sacrificial rituals in the realm of public religion.
