Double-weighted statement

This substantial interdisciplinary work on Roman painting, architecture and poetry has two distinctive strands to it. First, it offers a detailed reconstruction of the decorative programme of the temple of Apollo in Pompeii, based on newly discovered, widely scattered archival evidence published here for the first time. Second, it proposes a novel reconstruction of the architecture and function of the Portico of Philippus in Rome and its cultural meaning during the Augustan period. The two strands combine to form an argument of unusual range and complexity, suggesting a fundamental reinterpretation of several of the most iconic texts of Latin poetry.
