Aspirin failure in patients presenting with acute cerebrovascular ischaemia
This was a challenging study, involving 51 patients with ischaemic stroke in the acute phase, to examine the relationship to aspirin use. The results are important as, whilst incomplete platelet inhibition can be found in acute cerebrovascular ischaemia, often it is not due to intrinsic resistance to aspirin but to incomplete compliance – this influences management.
Professor Greaves' clinical academic expertise in haemostasis/antithrombotics was necessary for study design with patients having acute brain injury (demands around consent to participate), organisation of the study, data interpretation and drawing appropriate conclusions for patient management. This lead clinical academic contribution was distinctive and substantial.
